Screen Shot 2015-06-05 at 6.01.27 pmHave you ever watched someone laughing, I mean REALLY laughing. You usually end up joining in right? Humour is infectious. When laughter is shared, it binds people together and increases happiness and intimacy.

Gosh, I have just been sitting with a dear friend of mine and we were having a real belly laugh. Why were we laughing? Well, to be honest, it was just kind of silly! But the more we laughed, the more we could not stop. When was the last time you had a real belly laugh? As you know, I am all about feeling great, through great fitness and healthy eating. But it is way more than that.

Laughter also triggers healthy and physical changes in the body. Humour and laughter you see; boosts your energy, it diminishes pain, it protects you from the damaging effects of stress. Hey and the best thing is that this priceless medicine is fun, free and so easy to use!

So how exactly is Laughter good for you?

  • It relaxes the WHOLE BODY! A good rip roaring belly laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after!
  • Laughter will boost your immune system. Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease.
  • Laughter triggers the release of endorphins.  The body’s natural fell-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.
  • Laughter protects the heart. Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increase blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems.

So if the health reasons alone haven’t inspired you to start laughing more then read on to how it can help with your mental health.

Laughter will dissolve distressing emotions! You can’t feel angry, anxious or sad when you are laughing!

Laughter will help you relax and recharge. It will reduce stress and increase energy enabling you to stay focused and accomplish more!

Humour can also shift perspective.  It will allow you to see situations in a more realistic, less threatening light. A humorous perspective creates psychological distance, which can help you avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Woo hoo!!! So let’s laugh!!!  If you’re going to get all these health benefits, then let’s do it.

SO how you gonna get some laughter going?? Here are a few suggestions to get belly muscles into action

  • Watch a funny movie
  • Go to a comedy club
  • Seek out funny people
  • Tell a funny story, even if no one else laughs, you will!
  • Host a fun evening with some friends
  • Play around with the kids
  • Play with a pet
  • My personal favourite is singing and dancing to my children! It’s the teenager’s face that cracks me up!!

Learn to see the lighter side of life. Learn to laugh at yourself and share embarrassing moments! Or try to find the humour in a bad situation, e.g. laughing at the irony of life! 🙂

Laughing must not be taking lightly! It is a serious subject. BUT have a laugh at the same time.
